more info, about their latest album “The End of Irony”:
For far too long we have loved things in the name of “guilty pleasures.” What is, and what is not cool can be so fickle. To protect ourselves, we have reinvented irony to serve as a silly suit of armor that says: “I’m just kidding around, so don’t get all judgy-pants on me.” Of course, this type of behavior just made accusations of hipster-ness fly off the handle. When it really comes down to it though, we all know that having fun shouldn’t be a crime. That is why Captain Ahab has declared The End of Irony. In fact, that’s what their fucking new album is called! It’s called The End of Irony.
Do you love Powermetal even though it is just for thirtysomething LARPers? Well, good for you! Shout it to the sky! Do you like shaking your ass to some Electro-Clash even though your neighbor scoffs because you forgot it’s called Nu-Rave now. Well fuck names! Do you want to cuddle in the morning sunlight to some 70’s Soft Rock, but your sweetie-pie thinks you’re making fun of him/her? Dude, making love is awesome, and sometimes being sappy isn’t a bad thing! Captain Ahab knows how you feel. They love all these criminalized sounds and many more, and they combine them in a way that irony would never permit. There is serious commitment going on here. Commitment to making epic songs that defy expectation, trends, and any sort of cool-factor. But we’re not talking about some lazy mash-up album, here. They have composed these songs from scratch. The album creates a meticulous and sweeping cosmology that would satisfy even the headiest of 70’s prog heshers. Captain Ahab is fucking committed to freeing your soul! No short cuts on this album. Is that a live guitar player? Yeah, duh! Every band has one of those. So what do you think of this live orchestra then? How about this master sitar player flown out from India to play in a room next to a guy with a modular synthesizer the size of the WOPR. These songs are the real deal, passionate and unafraid. They’re the result of Captain Ahab’s dedication to their audience. If you are ready to be set free, then your lucky day has come. All you need to do is LISTEN!
Captain Ahab is Jonathan Snipes and Jim Merson from Los Angeles, CA. Jonathan writes, records, performs and produces the music, while Jim physicalizes the songs in live performance with aggressive “take off your pants” dancing action. They have appeared alongside No Age, HEALTH, Mika Miko, High Places and many others in the films ‘Live at the Smell’ & ‘40 Bands in 80 Minutes’ as well as shared stages with the likes of Kid606, Cylob, DAT Politics, Glass Candy, mc chris, John Frusciante, Richard Devine, and 3OH!3. In 2011 Captain Ahab will tour Australia and New Zealand for tours, as well as their eighth tour of the USA.

Album: Capslock – Combustion
by cutups on Dec.20, 2010, under audio
Capslock is Joris Vijfhuizen, a live act and producer from the Netherlands. He’s been making tunes since the gabber days of the 90s, but since the mid-2000′s, he’s crafted a more nuanced and finely honed style of dark, broken beaks influenced by breakcore, electro and industrial.
I’ve been really impressed with some of his work that he’s been releasing for free or as a pay-what-you want download over the past few years, through Ketacore and UEH Records. His 2009 release on UEH “Amniocentesis” was solidly one of the top hard and broken records of the year.
His latest effort is entitled “Combustion”, is 14 tracks of chunky left-field broken hardcore and industrial acid, solidly for fans of Sounds Never Seen and Somatic Responses. You can stream or download it from his bandcamp site linked below.

BROKEN NOTE BIO
Raised on a diet of pure filth, Broken Note have dragged their own unique sound kicking and screaming into the electronic music scene. Combining lean, considered production skills with an appreciation of diverse rough beats, Broken Note have quickly established themselves as a sonic force to be reckoned with.
Broken Note have quickly racked up several critically-acclaimed releases over the past two years on such established and well-praised labels as Ad Noiseam, Ruff (Peace Off’s slow and nasty sister), Damage, Prspct & Sustained. Fall 2009 saw the release the retrospective Terminal Static on Ad Noiseam, with remixes by notable producers such as Hecq and I Am The Sun (Enduser and Casey Beagle). They are regularly featured in DJ sets and radio shows worldwide, counting tastemakers like Mary-Anne Hobbes and Rob Booth as supporters and fans. Along with a busy production schedule, Broken Note were featured prominently at festival gigs throughout 2009, with a headline sets on the Overkill stage at world-leading Glade Electronic Music Festival, Maschinenfest Industrial Festival, and various tours throughout Europe, North America, Scandinavia & Japan.
Their slower-tempo sound can loosely be described as Dubstep, but has little in common with much of the scene’s output. Instead they draw from the Sino-Rastafarian sound and heavy bass, combined with more of the kind of dark and aggressive beats that can be found in Breakcore and Jungle. Their Drum’n'Bass output is similarly disturbingly brutal, with undulating beats and bass that are unashamed to draw from the darker, edgier fringes of Gabber and Techno. Dancefloors worldwide have been set alight by the astonishing heaviness, inducing hallucinations of a dark and tech-saturated future.
Broken Note’s live sets use Ableton Live at the core alongside various midi controllers and FX sculpted by on-the-fly warping, cueing and live key work, intermingling many of their own tunes with edits of music created by the artists they draw inspiration from. Expect a mash-up of everything from dark Dubstep and Hardtekno, to the most evil D’n'B and Hardcore for a sonic experience that’s diverse and engaging.
You best believe Broken Note is that dark spreading tide set to further corrupt ears around the world. Get ready for it.
